"Even then we could feel it.. there was so much death around us, we each felt as if anger and aggression were soaking through our very souls. It was difficult, even with all our training, to retain our balance and focus on our situation, especially after witnessing Master Tann slaughtered so callously..."
- Cal Nyl'ana, reflecting on the Battle of Coruscant
Cal Nyl'ana was a male Coruscanti Jedi who served in the Great War as a frontline combatant, an assigned techician and a fighter ace with the Republic Navy. Born to unknown parents, the infant Nyl'Ana was brought to the Jedi Temple on Coruscant by an anonymous trader, who would say nothing about the child save his name. Cal would later learn much of his lineage upon tracking down the trader in the Outer Rim many years later.
As a Jedi, Cal was noted for his cool head and diplomatic approach to all situations. He became known for wearing a suit of light utility armour in place of the traditional Jedi garb, due not only to the suits protective abilities but also because of its convenience to a mechanically minded individual.

Biography
Jedi Training
Approximately twenty years of formal training at the Jedi Temple on Coruscant
- Age 1-12 Youngling
- Age 12-21 Padawan of Master Tsuyo Jios
- Age 21-28 Jedi Knight of the Republic
Early Life
As an Initiate, Cal was an almost prodigal student, approaching all aspects of his training with great respect and enthusiasm. He displayed a great affinity for technology at an early age, and as a teenager made the decision to follow the path of the Jedi Sentinel. He spent a great deal of time studying with the Temple Weaponmaster Jhoka Tann, who taught him a great many important lessons about Lightsaber combat.
At age twelve, Cal was chosen as a Padawan by Jedi Master Tsuyo Jios, whose proactive approach to training took the pair all over the galaxy. Jios tried to keep the boy away from the War for as long as he could, but eventually it was unavoidable, and Cal was no younger than seventeen before he was fighting the Sith alongside his Master.
When Cal was twenty-one years old, he accompanied his master to the frigid outer rim planet of Rhen Var, where a group of Jedi had gathered for a respite from the frontlines. Master Jios used the opportunity to promote Cal to full Jedi Knight, without having to return home to Coruscant.
Jedi Knight
The Great War
After his promotion, Cal was directed by the Jedi Council to accompany the Republic 7th Fleet to the Obroa-Skai system, following a tip-off that the Sith were planning to invade. Cal's job was to manage and oversee the Fleets Engineering corps, as well as acting as a liason between the Fleet and the Jedi Council. It was during this campaign that Cal met many future friends, both Jedi and otherwise. It was also the catalyst for Cal to master his Lightsaber skills, as he witnessed firsthand the tenacity and combat prowess of many Sith on the Battlefield.
Cal later served as a pilot with the Republic Fighter corps, displaying his great aptitude for space combat He came to dislike flying however, deciding he much preferred to work on the ships from the outside rather than manipulating them from the inside.
The Great war would come to have a profound effect on the young Knight, and over the next few years he learnt a great deal about the art of warfare and the nature of combat. Master Jios had been a consular, and as such was a firm believer in the role of Jedi as wise, peaceful protecters, a view that Cal had initially adopted also. However through constant experience, Cals pacifist attitude gradually gave way to a steely resolve, and he became a renowned and proficient fighter.
However, observing the death and devastation wrought by the Sith on countless worlds, year after year, Cal found it harder and harder to carry on. While he never enjoyed killing, the line between fighting to save lives and fighting to defeat an enemy became more and more blurred, and by the time of the Ando campaign, Cal was thoroughly disillusioned with his position. He requested to the Council that he might have some time away from the frontlines, to return to the Temple on Coruscant and attempt to regain his former serenity, and hopefully commune with the Force in a way he had not managed for years.
The Battle of Coruscant
In an unfortunate stroke of irony, this was the time the Sith chose to attack Coruscant, and Cal had barely been home a week when the Capital world was once more ablaze with the fires of war. Cal joined his fellow Knights in a valiant defence of the Jedi Temple, desperately fighting to protect everything he held dear. The battle claimed the lives of many of Cal's friends and mentors, including the old Togruta Weaponmaster and Cal's fellow frontline combatant Marcus Vel. Cal also lost his trusty yellow-bladed Lightsaber, and at one point was forced to resort to his bare hands to defend himself from an overzealous Sith Marauder.
When the order to retreat was given, Cal attempted to find and gather survivors together before heading to the Docking bay. He encountered his old Master Tsuyo Jios, left for dead in a corner of the Library; with his last breath, the Master told Cal to take his Lightsaber with him, even managing a smile while whispering that he wouldn't need it anymore.
Together with three Knights and a group of Padawans, Cal was able to locate an old Jedi Transport and pilot it out of the battlezone into orbit, where a group of Republic Battleships were preparing to escape with survivors.
Current
Following this harrowing experience, Cal has felt greatly displaced, struggling with his memories and trying to stave off trauma. He has felt his connection to the force diminish slightly, and feels more than ever before the need to find his peace again.
To this end, he has traveled along with a great many Jedi to the Deep Core world of Tython, hoping to find absolution amongst the ancient temples and mysterious jungles.
Powers and Abilites
Lightsaber combatant
For many years until his promotion to Jedi Knight, Cal relied mostly on his knowledge of the Shii-Cho Form, preferring to devote his time to the pursuit of other skills and abilities. However, after gaining more battlefield experience, he began to realise that Form I did not afford him enough flexibility in combat. He reluctantly began to study the Ataru and Soresu forms, hoping he could find a workable balance between the two Forms. After a few months of study, he found that neither form suited him well, as he did not have the vibrant, aggressive attitude that Ataru required, nor the patience and diplomatic precision that Soresu demanded. On the advice of his close friend Marcus Vel, Cal eventually came to study the Shien Form, and later its subform Djem So. The Defensive nature of the Classical Form V suited Cal well, while the offensive power allowed him the adaptability he had sought.
Having finally found his ideal style of combat, Cal felt a renewed appreciation for the art, and began devoting much more time to practicing his saber skills. By the age of twenty-eight, Cal's abilities with the blade had become quite formidible.
