General Wiki usage

Here is some basic information about using the wiki. For advanced help, please use the official mediawiki help at wikimedia.org.

How do I create my first article?

If you want to contribute to the wiki by writing your first article here, you should read the guide on How to post your first article.

How do I edit an article?

Click on the "edit" button on top of the article. You need to be registered with a confirmed e-mail adress to edit pages, though. Also, be so nice as to observe the editing rules editing rules.

How do I format my text?

Here is a formatting tutorial from Wikipedia. If you are wondering how to do something you've seen in another article, there is an easy way to check it out: Just open the source code by clicking on the "edit" tab on top of the article, and look for the line where the magic was done. Or just copy the whole source code into your new article and put your own text in.

How do I use Talk pages?

Talk pages are to contain information or discussions about the associated page. You can, for example, make suggestions on how to improve a story somebody else posted by using the story's talk page. You can also discuss things with another user on his talk page, e. g. asking for help in an upcoming project.

Please sign all posts on talk pages; this is done by typing four tilde keys ("~") at the end of your text - when you save it, your user name and a timestamp appear. Try to keep discussion readable; make headlines, use the list function in the editor, keep it chronological and so on. An example would read like this:

  • Hey, I've never heard of this planet. Is it canon or your creation? PeggySue, 05:05, 05 February 2009 (UTC)
  • The name appears in the fan novel "Beyond the Stars", but everything else is mine. JillJackson, 06:06, 06. February 2009 (UTC)

How do I get the the black-and-white-theme back? And how do I improve the looks of this Wiki?

The default style is set to be Mantralux' Tattoine Desert, but you can easily set it to your style of choice. Go to the Special:Preferences page and select MonoBook, the default style, for example. Using personal Stylesheets and Javascripts, you can even implement your own styles - or contact the Admin, so that he can install the skin for everyone to use. Who knows, there might be someone else who likes a HelloKitty-Style.

How do I use the Templates?

Once you have created a new page, you will want to fill it with something. If you create a character page or guild page, we have templates for you to use. You can use these templates, simply by going to the appropriate template and clicking on the "Edit" tab. Copy the text on the Edit-Page and paste it into your new page. Once there, you can fill out the appropriate information in the tables provided in the Template.

You can also always check how other people created their pages to get an idea of what you are supposed to do. Simply go to their page and click the edit tab. But as it is stated in our rules, be sure not to change anything in other peoples characters/guild pages.

More will follow in the near future.

Where can I find a picture for my character?

Until the game is published and we can use screenshots, some improvisation is required.

  • Use the Hero Machine. It doesn't always look to great, but the customization is really good - and it's free to use.
  • Use screenshots from some other game. Tiger Wood's PGA Tour, for example, is said to have a pretty amazing character creation, and Eve Online also has really nice faces.
  • Search the web for a fitting picture. Make sure they're free to use, though, or get permission by the artist. Looking for pictures with a creative commons tag might be useful for finding free to use stuff.

I'm getting an error message about browser security issues when I try to copy text.

This results from a conflict of your browser and the WYSIWYG-editor installed on this site. Mozilla Firefox (and possibly other browsers) doesn't allow scripts to access the general clipboard, but this is what the editor extension tries to do. Try avoiding using CTRL/SHIFT+Ins to copy text, and use SHIFT+X/C/V instead.

The manual states you can change this either manually using this guide, or you can wait for this Firefox Addon to be updated to Firefox 3.0.

How do I create my own infobox, rather than copying one already listed?
