Back story:
Kelko Silero was born on Dantooine, the second and youngest son of the Silero family. Kelko’s only sibling was his older brother, who looked after Kelko harshly. Clearly, Kelko’s older brother was the favorite which left Kelko feeling resentful of his family and especially his brother. When he was in his early teens Kelko left his family, utterly finished with the tedious life he led in his older brother’s shadow. On his own, Kelko fared badly and it was only when a traveling mercenary by the name of Keeric Dreft took pity on the young boy and subsequently taught him how to competently use a Blaster that Kelko began to really stand on his own. For the next few years Keeric mentored the young man, until finally they went their separate ways. Back on his own, Kelko put his new skills to use as a Bounty Hunter and bodyguard. It was after a couple of years working solo that Kelko became entangled in the conflict between the Sith Empire and the Republic when he was duped into killing a Jedi.
Imperial Entanglements:
The galactic civil war of TOR meant a lot of things to a lot of different people. For Kelko Silero, a Bounty Hunter, it meant he had to pick a side. Not that he had ever gotten the chance to make a choice. An old friend of Kelko, that went by the name of Dostoga Alder, an old degenerate Dug, gave Kelko what he called “An exclusive jackpot for a friend.” This “jackpot” was an assignment promising a very hefty reward for the head of some holy man who spoke up against a local government on the planet Balmorra.
Dostoga Alder didn’t give Kelko the name of the client, which allowed him to take a generous cut of the profit despite the fact Kelko was doing all the work. For what it was worth Dostoga Alder told Kelko it was probably better he didn't know who the client was. Kelko, scratching the stubble on his chin thoughtfully, figured he had nothing to lose and everything to gain. Stowing away on board a republic transport shuttle en route to Balmorra Kelko made his way deliberately to his mark.
The shuttle landed with a baleful groan, it was a wonder the hunk of scrap didn’t shake itself apart. Kelko was all too eager to get off that vessel that seemed to him, like an utter deathtrap. Checking his scuffed and worn armor, and more importantly his jet pack, Kelko prepared for the hunt. Hefting his blaster carbine, Kelko throttled his jet pack until he was high above the war torn landscape.
An antenna moved slightly on the right side of Kelko’s full face helmet, scanning the environment for a sign of the mark. Just as the jet pack began to send warnings to land immediately, Kelko found the trail. With a grunt, Kelko throttled down his jet pack until it was just barely idling, letting gravity do most of the work descending. When he was only a yard from the ground Kelko rammed the throttle of his jet pack all the way forward, the fire from his pack was so intense he could feel some of the heat from within his armor.
With a black sooty halo around his feet, Kelko waited until his heart stopped threatening to explode from its furious beating. With a cynical depreciating grin that only one side of his mouth performed, Kelko eyed the holy man preaching a dozen yards down from the seedier elements of the city. Thinking of the small fortune awaiting him, Kelko stalked through the ruins of Balmorra, skirting the curiously large audience listening to the holy man’s raving until he had his back facing him. Within the crowd Kelko was nigh invisible, and after making sure everyone’s attention was riveted on the holy man, Kelko raised his blaster and fired three shots.
The first shot was aimed for the man’s head, the second was aimed to the lower right in case he reflexively turned, the third was much the same except aimed to the lower left. With a bellow the holy man drew a lightsaber, deflecting the first shot aimed for his head but as he turned reflexively to the right to face his attacker the second shot struck him in the chest throwing him backwards onto the filthy street where he lay unmoving. Kelko stared dumbly at the dead Jedi, who’d he’d been told was merely a holy man. The crowd gazed at the bounty hunter with fear and condemnation in their eyes, no one screamed, no one cried, they just stared at him.
The venom in their gaze paralyzed Kelko, his thoughts ran together in a jumbled mess as he struggled unsuccessfully to make sense of the awful scene before him. No one killed a Jedi, to do so was an attack on the Republic, an attack on the Jedi Order itself. Kelko knew he’d might as well have shot himself before ever daring to kill a Jedi. An old crone knelt before the fallen Jedi and gently took the lightsaber from his lifeless hands; she then approached the Bounty Hunter and thrust the ancient weapon towards him whispering furiously through rotting teeth “Well, take your prize Bounty Hunter. I hope your reward was worth murdering what hope we had left!”
Kelko, his face hidden behind his helmet was a mask of horror as he numbly accepted the lightsaber from the old crone’s withered hands. Terrified at what he’d done, Kelko ran from the crowd and their condemning stares thinking of only one thing, running. It was as he ran that the horrible puzzle fell into an order Kelko could understand, he’d been setup. With teeth bared in a black fury that would make a Sith Warrior blanch, Kelko plotted his revenge.
This time determined to get on a better ship Kelko rammed his blaster into the back of a commercial transport shuttle pilot’s back, giving him an order to fly him back to Hutta with all haste. After the shuttle had landed on Hutta Kelko threw the pilot a generous wad of credits, feeling anything but greedy about his money at the time. At a back alley Cantina Kelko kicked down the door to the private racket Dostoga Alder was running. Instead of the ruddy yellow lights making the place feel like a place to relieve yourself, Kelko was greeted by pitch darkness.
Activating the night vision built in his helmet Kelko surveyed the room until his gaze fell on Dostoga Alder or at what fried remains were left of him. A figure cloaked in robes so black that he'd be almost imperceptible in darkness without night vision stood over the remains gripping a double bladed lightsaber. The Sith Inquisitor turned around slowly, savoring the fear he could sense in the Bounty Hunter. The fury that Kelko had nurtured had evaporated. His blaster shaking, it was all Kelko could do not to collapse.
The Sith Inquisitor’s lips pulled back to reveal sharply filed teeth, making his sickly appearance all the more ghastly. With a flick of his wrist the Sith Inquisitor pulled the lightsaber from Kelko’s belt and in a voice that sounded used to getting obedience the Sith addressed the Bounty Hunter “Kelko Silero, welcome to the Sith Empire.” The malicious glee that dwelt in the Sith Inquisitor’s eyes dared the Bounty Hunter to challenge his statement, Kelko gazed at the Sith’s twisted visage and accepted his fate, he had been conscripted. Like an afterthought the Sith Inquisitor tossed a sack of credits at Kelko's feet with a sickening finality. Despite the fortune at his feet all Kelko could think of was how the sound of that bag hitting the floor sounded so similar to the Jedi's corpse colliding with that filthy street on Balmorra.
