Background

Born to artists Renould and Felcyone Hylo, Lilin was a much longed for daughter and grew up enjoying all the love and attention parents foster on an only child. Her father was a painter of some renown and her mother a poet whose works were celebrated far beyond their homeworld of Alderaan. Lilin blossomed amongst the rich culture of art and philosophy but her family saw in her early glimpses of a true love of Alderaan’s verdure.

Excelling in most of her studies Lilin was nonetheless an apathetic student, the only exceptions being areas of botany and landscape preservation. At the age of six she was given a small corner in one of her parents’ gardens where she would spend all of her free time, returning for supper with grass stained knees and hands so ingrained with dirt no amount of a mother’s scrubbing could remove it.

At fourteen the girl had grown tall and her alabaster skin and piercing blue eyes began to turn the heads of her teenage classmates. She was shy yet people wanted to be near her. The peal of her laughter or the way she would flick locks of unruly copper hair from her eyes evoked powerful feelings in not just boys. But she was endearingly oblivious to the effect she had on everyone. Her heart and thoughts belonged to her beloved garden and adoring parents.

One golden summers afternoon Lilin was enjoying the dance of downy flower seeds playing in the breeze of her wild meadow when a sudden pain pierced her heart and an icy feeling turned her insides to water. Dread gave her feet wings as she fled back inside the house where her father’s tight embrace could not stem the flood of weeping until, finally exhausted, she fell asleep and he carried her to bed. Upon waking and making her way down stairs Lilin found her father sat in the kitchen staring listlessly out of the window at the wide blue sky. He sat her down and holding her hands told her an offical had called early that morning. On it’s way back from an auditorium on Coruscant her mother’s transport had suffered a malfunction. There had been an accident... She was forever lost to them.

The Hylo’s became a house of sorrow. The laughter and song that once rang through the halls was silenced. Lilin’s beautiful garden began to wither, almost a reflection of the decline in health of her father. He would forget to eat until reminded by his young daughter, when he would smile with sad eyes and pick at whatever she had made him. The doctors said he died of a broken heart.

Unable to cope with the enormity of the tragic events Lilin retreated inside herself. Refusing to eat or even speak she was taken to hospital and, without any remaining family to claim her, placed under ministry care. For weeks she lay listless in bed, the only colour in the stark white room the hair aflame on her tear-damp pillow. The more sympathetic hospital staff would often have to leave the room in fits of weeping for the poor girl. As time went on visitors stopped coming to see Lilin, frightened by unexplainable feelings of enormous rage and deepest despair that assailed them at her bedside. Soon nurses only braved the room for short periods doing solely those tasks which the droids could not.

It came as a relief to everyone at the hospital when Lilin was taken off their hands. It was only when a compassionate teacher enquired after her favourite student that questions were raised. Some staff when queried claimed a doctor had transferred her to specialist facility while others said an Uncle had come forth and taken Lilin home. When authorities investigated further it seemed no one could remember the visitor’s face and none of the official release records had been filed. An enquiry was initiated and she was added to the missing persons database but Lilin was never seen again.
