"Onel Maanrit, born of Dac's soil, is nothing short of brutal. He believes that the ends do justify the means, and will uphold that with a passion," - Tython Jedi Informat

Onel is an adolescent Mon Calamari male, originally from the aquatic planet of Dac in the Calamari Sector. Onel was born in Coral City, the ancient planetary capital of the planet. It was in the floating city that he was first exposed to the Jedi Order, who came in 3640 BBY, when he was barely a youngling. This was sixteen years before the Treaty of Coruscant, before Galatic events would spring up and begin to shape the universe.

Onel was shipped from his homeworld, and taken to the Jedi Temple on Coruscant, where his formal training began. It took a long stint as a Jedi Initiate to crack Onel, who was not only reckless, but willing to do anything it took to complete his training. Onel, was therefore assigned to one of the most peaceful Jedi Knights at the time, Ror Vlohei, an Ithorian who practiced non-violence, one of the strongest Jedi Healers at the time. He was supposed to teach his ways to Onel, although his life was eventually cut short at the climactic Sacking of Coruscant.

After his master's death, Onel, in a flurry of shame, offered himself up and began the process of finding a new master. Leaving for the close ecumenopolis of Metellos, he tried to determine what the future may hold for him. With the change in his spirit, he knew that his world would never be the same.

General

Appearance

Like most of his species, Onel is salmon colored, with his specialty markings on his bulbous head in a mustard yellow. The markings themselves are blotches, and are nothing but paternal manifestations that are passed on during the fertilization of the Mon Calamarian young. He is of average weight and height, although he has become a bit more trimmed with the increase in training associated with a Padawan learning schedule.

Onel also has the unique plate sized Calamarian eyes, which allow him to see at different wavelengths then the human eyes. He can control both of them independent of one another, and is constantly scanning the room with one, while focusing on someone he is speaking to ahead of him. His average outfit is a tattered set of Padawan robes that was given to him upon his acceptance with the Jedi Knight Ror Vlohei. They are tight against his chest, and are clasped at the middle by a navy belt. His lightsaber hands precociously at his side, within the reach of his suction-cupped hands. The claw-like structure of his hands prevented any type of Jedi gloves, and it was hard for him in the extreme cold climates. His hands adapted though, and began to act more as receptors when his eyes could not decipher something.

When not at the Temple, he can be seen in a pair of tailored pants with a pressed shirt that bears the insignia of the Mon Calamari homeworld, Dac. Other then this, he has a dress uniform for special performances, although most of the time he is seen in robes because of his duty to the Order.

Personality

Onel is a staunch believer in the fact that the ends always justify the means. He will always uphold this message, even if it goes against the Jedi Code. It has been his fault since day one, and he does not really know where it stems from. It isn't a part of Dac's culture, and so it is something that was always bred in him. Onel fights for this cause, but only when it comes into contact with what he is aiming for. He will not kill one to save a thousand if it is for something he doesn't believe in.

To this end, Onel constantly believes in the poor, the people who die huddled up in the slums of the world. Onel considers himself as a liberal, someone who fights for the Order, but for the lowest of the galaxy. While his means may be flawed and his mission sometimes askew, he still will never forget it. He considers himself as a patron of the impoverished, and a savior of the voice-less.

He also struggles with what he is taught at the Jedi Temple. While he respects the views of the Elders and their policies, he constantly sees himself as wanting to go against many of their wishes. It isn't a move towards the Dark Side, it is just his personal opinion on the best way to get things done. In his view, he thinks that he should use the Force to create a world where equality and justice can be enforced and upheld. The utopia that he tries to preach comes as a result of his experiences in both the Metellos and the Coruscant slums, a place that he always goes to in order to see.

Onel is also extremely quiet, and only becomes passionate when he is speaking about something close to his heart. He doesn't like to just throw himself out there, and prefers the phrase that actions speak louder then words. More often then not, his action-orientation behavior ends up as foolhardiness or reckless abandon. It has gotten him into some hot situations where his Master would have to bail him out. Now, with Knight Vlohei in tune with the Force, Onel must be content with forging a new world for himself. Whether or not he will ever accomplish something is beyond him, all he searches for now are answers.

Languages

As customary on his planet, Onel was initially credited with the comprehension of three languages, including his native tongue, Mon Calamarian. In accordance with the upkept treaty with the Quarren people, Onel was well versed in Quarrenese so that he could communicated with Quarren refugees who lived above the water with the Mon Calamari. When he was shipped off, he decided to pursue these two languages, and even briefly considered a career as a Jedi Interpreter. But, with the increase in translating droids, there was no real need for a sentinent interpreter.

Upon arrival at Coruscant, Onel also decided that it would be in his best interest to learn Galactic Basic. The majority of the students that he was with could not understand his language. Therefore, he began the secret study of Galactic Basic, which was completed after his daily studies with a tutor. It took him a number of years, and he struggled with the characters, but he eventually was able to become fluent. It never reached the level of his Mon Calamarian and Quarrenese.

Family

Onel was born in Coral City, during the beginning of the Jedi-Sith Cold War. As part of a large spawning, his brothers and sisters are almost un-nameable. It would even be impossible to see how his family branched out further into Dac, and when he was taken to the Coruscant Jedi Temple, he only remained in contact with the closest of his family. Most of the others remained as seperate, and extremely distant family members.

As required by the Jedi Code, Onel has not pursued any type of female relationship. The Jedi have a strict rule against any marriage or any type of love besides feelings of brotherly relation. Onel has not had any urges, and he maintains that this is because of the ability for his people to monitor their hormones levels, unlike anything possessed by human-like species.

Companion

Onel maintains one submersibile probe droid, called F-76, which is stored on his ship when not in use. The probe droid also doubles as a scout, but it is mostly needed when Onel is sent to investigate deep waters or an aquatic planet.

Brief Background

Onel Mannarit was born to nondescript parents in the general ward of Coral City, along with many of his brothers and sisters. He was raised in a moderate Mon Calamarian estate where he learned about the history of his people, and the languages that would serve him his entire life. He also gained an appreciation for the Whaladon species of his world, which would have a great impact on him in his later life. The Whaladons would sometimes come to the surface, revealing their fins, and there was a small colony near his family's rural aqua-dome. This would resurface in his later life when he would name his ship and his primary weapon after the fragile creatures.

The majestic beasts could speak to the other native species of the planet, and Onel was graced with their presence when he was only a couple years of age. He was swimming at the maximum depth of three meters, when his foot was tangled on a nearby piece of coral. Struggling for air, the creature saw his pain and transported him back to the surface. With no problem coming with the depressurization, he was saved. Shortly after this experience it was discovered that he was Force sensitive. The Order's representative came and he was taken by the Falleen Jedi Master Sifou Daais to the Jedi Temple on Coruscant.

Here, at the early age, he began the training of a youngling. He was assimilated into one of the clans, and started his work with classes and an understanding of the Force. He spent most of his extra time learning Galactic Basic, but he also liked to play Grav-ball with a number of the other initiates. Moderately popular, and just an adquate student, Onel scratched his way through his younger years, and prepared for the Jedi Padawan stage that he was closely approaching. He was afraid that he wouldn't be chosen and would be forced to take a position in the Jedi Service Corps, but there was a saving grace. During these years Onel was categorized as unruly and upstart, and he was constantly going against his teacher's wishes.

At age eleven, Onel was chosen as a Padawan for the aged Jedi Knight, Ror Vlohei. An Ithorian with a way for pacifism and Jedi healing, he was chosen for the guiding light for Onel. It was also whispered that if Onel could be transformed into a strong Knight, that Ror could be elevated to the position of a Jedi Master. The years that he had spent in service would not have gone to waste, and could be applied to a brighter future.

Five years Onel spent with Ror Vlohei, learning to alleviate his stress and apply himself to the teachings of the Light side. Things didn't progress for awhile, but after constant supervision and instilling, Onel started to change. This was also inspired by the numerous trips the Knight took with his padawan into the slums, observing the disproportion between the rich of Coruscant and the poor that they distanced themselves for. Vlohei, a renowned humanitarian and philanthropist, eventually passed on his views to his apprentice. Without his patience and care for his young learner, Onel might not have ever made it out of the apprentice stage of the Order.

This continued for five years, interspersed with missions according to the Jedi Order. Vlohei, slightly aged, took the missions that would bring his padawan in contact with refugees and the slighted, and Onel constantly found himself evacuating dying planets or protecting caravan camps as they fended off bandits and pirates. These experiences would never drop from Onel's mind, and guided him for the rest of his life. It was the pain that he felt for the oppressed that drove him to real change, and he became so angry about it that he would sometimes scream in silence. While his master tried to control these outbursts, he still moved him towards these events, trying to push him past feelings into real action.

Onel's world changed with the arrival of the Sith Empire on Coruscant, that culminated in the Sacking of Coruscant. As his interactions changed more into diplomacy with coalitions and the prevention of the Sith invasion, Vlohei started to lose track of his training, in favor of real combat and work. When the Dark Jedi stormed the streets of Coruscant, Onel's Jedi master was slaughtered in cold blood, refusing to fight on the grounds of his beliefs. Onel, in rage, raised his blade, and struck down the Sith, smashing his lightsaber against the Sith's corpse in frustration.

With the evacuation underway, Onel spoke with his superiors, and planned his absence on Metellos. He purchased a small apartment there, where he stayed mostly in silence. He squandered the small fortune he had on the social scene of the rich districts, but found the people there artifical and immoral. He soon found himself in the slums beneath the stratablocks. The poverty there was so overwhelming, that he really defined the future he wanted. He was going to be a champion of the poor, rallying other Jedi to that path. The ends of his mission would justify any means to get there, and he knew that his future, although bright at the end, would be dark in the intermedium. Returning to the Coruscant Temple, he sought to fully master his training and find a new master.

Currently

As of now, Onel is living in the Jedi quarters of the Jedi Temple on Coruscant. Without a master, his padawan apprenticeship is not completed, and he seeks a mentor to train him for the Trials that will secure his place as a Knight of the Jedi Order.

Incorporating Onel

If you would like to incorporate Onel or his master, Ror into one of your stories, please feel free to contact me on the forums. My name is Onel, and I would be glad to hear how you think our two characters could intermingle. Right now, I am deciding what path to take with Onel, whether he will stay as a Jedi and walk the path into oblivion, or whether he will see his inhibitions for what they really are.

Server Information

Onel Maanrit will be playing on the official Roleplaying server upon the release of Star Wars: The Old Republic. This server has yet to be announced, and Onel will follow the rest of the community to it, whether endorsed by BioWare or not.

Guild Affiliation

Onel is not in a guild currently, and he is not really in any place to do that right now. If the opportunity arises, and there is a common thread between this character and the backstory, then I might consider it. Currently though, I would rather flesh out Onel and his history before I get too indepth into anything.

Again though, I am up for anything, and if you have any idea for an organization that you are trying to get off the ground, then let me know. I might just be up for changing the world with you.
